A monumental season announcement for MWA at Wiener Staatsoper

The 2025 – 26 season at the Wiener Staatsoper has been announced and sees 10 MWA Artists sing 13 roles and present 2 new productions.

David Butt Philip will appear as the tortured prisoner Florestan alongside Christopher Maltman as the menacing Don Pizarro, in a gripping revival of Beethoven’s Fidelio. Verdi’s Luisa Miller showcases tenor sensation Freddie De Tommaso as Rodolfo, bringing his passionate vocalism to this Romantic tragedy. Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro includes Huw Montague Rendall as the cunning yet charming Conte Almaviva, in a role that continues to define his rising star status.

Mezzo-soprano Ekaterina Gubanova will enthrall as Venus in Wagner’s Tannhäuser while Adam Palka appears as Raimondo in Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor. In Janáček’s The Makropulos Affair, Pavel Černoch will portray Albert Gregor and Erin Morley brings sparkling virtuosity to Zerbinetta in Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos. Freddie De Tommaso also returns to Vienna as Don José in Bizet’s Carmen, following his recent critical acclaim in the role and legendary bass-baritone Gerald Finley will appear as the tormented Amfortas in Parsifal. Christopher Maltman continues a thrilling season, not only as Don Pizarro in Fidelio, but also as Scarpia in Tosca and Don Alfonso in Mozart’s Così fan tutte. Mezzo-soprano Angela Brower joins him in Così fan tutte as Dorabella.
