Adam Palka

Bass

One of the most in-demand basses today, Adam Palka has been praised for his “youthful and virile” voice, “whilst also having immense reserves of power” (Bachtrack). He has performed at many of the world’s most prestigious opera houses, including Teatro alla Scala, Opéra national de Paris, The Royal Opera, Teatro Real, Staatsoper Unter den Linden, and Gran Teatre del Liceu. In recent seasons, he has earned huge acclaim for his interpretation of Méphistophélès in Gounod’s Faust, a role he has sung at Wiener Staatsoper, The Royal Opera, Grand Théâtre de Genève, Staatsoper Stuttgart, and Staatsoper Hamburg: “Méphistophélès steals the show in the Wiener Staatsoper’s Faust… In fact, if one were to give the devil his due, this opera would be named after him, particularly when the role is performed as admirably as by bass Adam Palka.”

In the 2025–26 season, Palka makes his anticipated company debut at the Metropolitan Opera as the Commendatore in Mozart’s Don Giovanni under the baton of Yannick Nézet-Séguin, and returns to Oper Stuttgart for three signature roles: Timur in Turandot, Count Rodolfo in La sonnambula, and Sarastro in Die Zauberflöte. Further highlights include his returns to the Wiener Staatsoper as Raimondo in Lucia di Lammermoor and to the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, as Pimen in Boris Godunov under Sir Antonio Pappano in Richard Jones’ celebrated staging.

In the 2024–25 season, Palka returned to Covent Garden to reprise both Timur (Turandot) and his much-praised Méphistophélès in David McVicar’s production of Faust. At Staatsoper Hamburg, he appeared as Walter in Verdi’s Luisa Miller, while at Staatsoper Stuttgart he sang Sarastro (Die Zauberflöte) and Vodník (Rusalka). On the concert stage, he performed Verdi’s Requiem in both Stuttgart and Warsaw, and made his BBC Proms debut in Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with the Danish National Symphony Orchestra conducted by Fabio Luisi.

Recent engagements include the title role in Boris Godunov at Teatro alla Scala; Timur (Turandot) and Gremin (Eugene Onegin) at Gran Teatre del Liceu; Méphistophélès (Faust), Don Basilio (Il barbiere di Siviglia), and Vodník (Rusalka) at Wiener Staatsoper; Leporello (Don Giovanni) at Staatsoper Berlin; the Commendatore (Don Giovanni) and Timur (Turandot) at The Royal Opera; Timur (Turandot) at Teatro Real Madrid; Raimondo (Lucia di Lammermoor) and Skula (Prince Igor) at Opéra national de Paris; Colline (La bohème) and Don Basilio (Il barbiere di Siviglia) at Bayerische Staatsoper; and the Commendatore (Don Giovanni) at Teatro Massimo di Palermo.

On the concert platform he has performed Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with the Stuttgarter Philharmoniker, Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis with the Szczecin Philharmonic, and Verdi’s Requiem at the Philharmonie de Paris and with the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, among others.

A graduate of the Gdańsk Conservatory in Poland and of the Opera Studio at Opernhaus Zürich, Palka is a soloist of Staatsoper Stuttgart, where his many roles have included Filippo II (Don Carlo), Fafner (Das Rheingold), Giorgio (I puritani), the title role in Boris Godunov, Rodolfo (La sonnambula), Escamillo (Carmen), and Vodník (Rusalka).

It is simply a permanent joy to listen to him on stage or on record. Endowed with almost colossal, telluric vocal means, the Polish bass Adam Palka makes light work of the role of Mephistopheles in both its evil and almost comical aspects.
– Olyrix

In Faust, the devil always gets the best tunes; in this production, he also got the best voice: as he was for Oper Stuttgart last season, Adam Palka was sensational. Unusually for a bass, his voice is youthful and virile whilst also having immense reserves of power. He could make Méphistophélès impossibly suave and attractive or turn him, in an instant, into a terrifying authoritarian. One normally associates the deep notes of a bass with gravel or velvet: with Palka, they were cold steel.
– Bachtrack

His resonant bass notes were a thing of wonder given his long and lean physique.

Méphistophélès steals the show in the Wiener Staatsoper’s Faust… In fact, if one were to give the devil his due, this opera would be named after him, particularly when the role is performed as admirably as by bass Adam Palka.
– Bachtrack

Adam Palka is an excellent Mephistopheles, fully entering into the demonic nature of this version of the character and proving to be menacing in tone and performance.
– OperaJournal

The sonorous tones of Adam Palka as a very youthful and rather Mephistophelean Don Basilio are striking and he relishes all the dynamic and orchestra-mimicking opportunities of ‘La calunnia’.

Adam Palka bellows formidably as Don Basilio
– Financial Times

As so often, it is Méphistophélès who commands the attention whenever he is involved, and Adam Palka, deputising impressively for the originally announced Erwin Schrott, has both voice and stage presence to do so.
