MWA Management welcomes internationally renowned stage director Calixto Bieito for worldwide general management.

Leading classical management agency, MWA Management, announces today the signing of Calixto Bieito, one of the most distinctive and influential voices in contemporary opera and theatre. The Spanish director is celebrated for his uncompromising artistic vision and his ability to reimagine canonical works with striking immediacy and emotional intensity. Currently celebrating the 30th anniversary of his first production, Bieito has challenged and provoked audiences with his productions that have redefined the relationship between performer, audience and stage. A frequent guest at many of the world’s leading opera houses and festivals, Bieito’s productions are instantly recognisable for their visual bravado, psychological depth and raw theatricality.

“Thirty years after my first production, I still feel that theatre and opera emerge from a place I do not completely understand. Perhaps from fear, from desire, from loneliness, from happiness or from the necessity to seeing the world through the eyes of others.

I am very happy to begin this adventure of art and complicity with Maria Mot, whose courage, intuition and trust in artistic freedom I value enormously. I feel this collaboration as the beginning of another uncertain and necessary journey,” said Calixto Bieito.

“I have always believed that the greatest artists don’t just interpret great works — they make them feel inevitable, urgent, alive,” said Maria Mot, Founder of MWA. I have always admired Calixto for his fearless and deeply human approach to storytelling and his productions have marked me profoundly. We are thrilled to welcome him to MWA and are fully committed to support the next chapter of his singular career.”

Calixto’s previous management says “As the artist agency “werktreue.com,” we have had the pleasure of supporting and assisting Calixto Bieito in his work since 2013. Our paths are now diverging. On the one hand, we are in the process of reducing and refocusing our workload due to age; on the other hand, Calixto Bieito is setting his sights on new goals. We will do our utmost to support him during this transition period in all projects that we have initiated, negotiated, and prepared.”

This new partnership reflects MWA’s continued growth, with Bieito joining other recent signings including Louise Alder, Christopher Maltman, Ekaterina Gubanova, Ausrine Stundyte and Vida Miknevičiūtė, alongside the agency’s longstanding clients such as Lise Davidsen, Freddie de Tommaso, David Butt Philip, Erin Morley, Huw Montague Rendall and Gerald Finley.
