Christopher Maltman

Baritone

One of the most sought-after dramatic baritones today, Grammy Award winner Christopher Maltman has appeared to wide acclaim on all the major operatic stages such as the Royal Opera House, Salzburg Festival, Wiener Staatsoper, the Metropolitan Opera, Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin and Teatro alla Scala in Milan, to name a few. Initially associated with the works of Mozart and a globally renowned Don Giovanni, his extensive and ever-growing repertoire includes roles such as Iago Otello, Wotan in Wagner’s Ring Cycle, Jochanaan Salome, Mandryka Arabella, the title role of Verdi’s Rigoletto, Orest Elektra, Amfortas Parsifal, Scarpia Tosca and Enescu’s monumental Oedipe.

In the 2023-24 season, Maltman makes two exciting debuts: Wotan Das Rheingold in one of the most eagerly anticipated events: Barrie Kosky’s new production of the Ring Cycle at the Royal Opera House; and as Scarpia in Puccini’s Tosca at the Staatsoper Berlin. He also appears as Don Alfonso Così fan tutte, another new production by Barrie Kosky and as Leporello Don Giovanni, both at Wiener Staatsoper; and Iago Otello at Bayerische Staatsoper. On the concert platform, Maltman joins Antwerp Symphony Orchestra conducted by Kevin John Edusei for Zemlinksy Lyric Symphony; Orchestre de Paris conducted by Daniel Harding for Mahler Symphony No.8; Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Ivor Bolton for Bach St Matthew Passion; Lahti Symphony Orchestra and Martyn Brabbins for Elgar The Dream of Gerontius and a recital with pianist Audrey Saint Gil at Oxford International Song Festival.

Last season he appeared as Leporello Don Giovanni at the Royal Opera House; Count di Luna Il Trovatore at Washington National Opera; Amfortas Parsifal at the Grand Théâtre de Genève; Ford Falstaff at the Metropolitan Opera; Wotan Die Walküre at the Teatro di San Carlo; and Rigoletto at Staatsoper Berlin. Maltman’s concert appearances included Brahm’s Ein deutches Requiem with Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Andreas Delfs and Zemlinsky Eine florentinische Tragödie with Münchner Rundfunkorchester under the baton on Patrick Hahn.

Further concert highlights have included the Chicago Symphony Orchestra conducted by James Conlon at the Ravinia Festival, Cleveland Orchestra and Franz Welser-Möst, Philharmonia Orchestra and Christoph von Dohnanyi, BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by John Adams, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment London Symphony Orchestra with Sir Simon Rattle, Tadaaki Otaka, Valery Gergiev and Sir Colin Davis, Concentus Musicus Wien with Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Orchestra Filarmonica della Scala and Daniel Harding, Dresden Staatskapelle and Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Boston Symphony and James Conlon and Sir Colin Davis, Los Angeles Philharmonic and Esa-Pekka Salonen, New York Philharmonic and Kurt Masur, and the Cleveland Orchestra and Franz Welser-Möst.

Following his degree in Biochemistry from the University of Warwick, Maltman studied singing at the Royal Academy of Music. His breakthrough performance came when he won the Lieder Prize in the 1997 Cardiff Singer of the World Competition. He remains a renowned interpreter of Lieder and song. His vast and varied discography includes John Corigliano’s Grammy award-winning Ghost of Versailles from Los Angeles Opera. In 2023, Erato released Berlioz: Roméo et Juliette & Cléopâtre featuring Maltman with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg, led by John Nelson.

Christopher Maltman’s booming, tight-smiling Wotan is capable of feverish aggression; it is shocking but not surprising when he cuts off Alberich’s finger to take the ring. Yet the tenderness with which Maltman embraces the fragile Erda, as the voice of the goddess is heard warning him to give up the ring, is just as indelible, and feels just as true.

The New York Times

Christopher Maltman is a Wotan of the very highest quality, his rounded baritone projecting enormous nobility as he contemplates Valhalla. We hear that nobility but we know that it’s false, because at every turn, he displays the character of an organised crime boss, his voice frequently turning savage to match.

Bachtrack

Christopher Maltman’s Wotan, smooth and mean, was a star turn. He negotiated the role’s psychological and vocal range admirably, lyrical and resplendent as he greeted the rainbow bridge and his fortress of Valhalla, built on the wages of sin.

The Guardian

Maltman was also a highlight, not just his character but his vocal performance standing as a worthy rival to Falstaff. The natural edge in his voice means he can move quickly between comic and threatening qualities.

New York Classical Review

First Amfortas also for Christopher Maltman, and another victory… the baritone probes the character’s pain with treasures of delicacy and a tone of pathetic truth.

Diapason Magazine

Maltman’s baritone voice grew strong and expressive in the aria “Lord teach me.” Such a happy coalescence of artists and art.
