Calixto Bieito

Director

One of the most distinctive and influential voices in contemporary opera and theatre, Calixto Bieito is celebrated for his uncompromising artistic vision and his ability to reimagine canonical works with striking immediacy and emotional intensity. His productions have been presented at leading international houses and festivals, where they consistently provoke, challenge, and redefine the relationship between performer, audience and stage.

Highlights of the 2025/26 season include Bieito’s ongoing direction of Wagner’s Der Ring des Nibelungen at the Opéra national de Paris with Die Walküre and Siegfried, both conducted by Pablo Heras-Casado. Following its success in Prague, his new Idomeneo is performed at Národní divadlo and La Monnaie de Munt, conducted by Enrico Onofri. Other productions include his interpretation of Hèctor Parra’s Orgia with Ensemble Intercontemporain at the Philharmonie de Paris. Bieito also creates a new production at the Schauspielhaus Zürich of Benjamín Labatut’s MANIAC and a staging of Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 14 at Teatro Arriaga. His acclaimed production of Carmen is performed at Teatro La Fenice.

The breadth and continuity of Bieito’s artistic contribution has been recognised with some of the most prestigious distinctions in European culture. In 2009 he became the first stage director to receive the European Culture Award / Pro Europa Prize, joining a distinguished group of laureates including Frank Gehry, Daniel Barenboim and Plácido Domingo. Further international honours include the Herald Angel Award at the Edinburgh International Festival for his production of Hamlet, the Franco Abbiati Prize in Italy, and multiple Irish Times Theatre Awards in the categories of Best Director, Best Production and Best Scenography.

In Spain, Bieito has received the National Theatre Award from the Ministry of Culture, the Ciutat de Barcelona Award in recognition of his international artistic impact and his contribution to the city’s cultural projection, the ADE Award from the Association of Stage Directors of Spain, and multiple honours from Ópera Actual, Ópera XXI and the Campoamor Lyric Theatre Awards. Throughout his career he has received the leading theatre and music critics’ awards in both Barcelona and Madrid on numerous occasions and across a wide range of productions, with distinctions encompassing Best Director, Best Production, Best Scenography and visual and interdisciplinary artistic creation.

Bieito studied Art, Literature, Philosophy and Romance Languages in Barcelona, where he also trained at the Institut del Teatre and the Académie expérimentale de théâtre in Paris. He began his artistic career at the age of 23 and has since created over 200 productions.

Alongside his work in opera and theatre, Bieito has developed an extensive practice as curator and visual creator, collaborating with major cultural institutions including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum on museum exhibitions and artistic installations. He has held the positions of Artistic Director of Teatro Romea, Barcelona; Hausdirektor of Theater Basel; and has been Artistic Director of Teatro Arriaga, Bilbao since 2017.

In an immaculate setting, Bieito organizes with relentless mastery

Díapason

Without a doubt, the work carried out by Calixto Bieito in the adaptation of the play is one of a brutal theatrical intelligence, combing the text so that this strength and poetic beauty that Encloses Pasolini can have a greater discursive narrative.
